Washington, D.C., November 28, 2025 – Two National Guard members from West Virginia were shot today in an “ambush-style” attack just a few blocks from the White House, authorities reported.
The victims are Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Andrew Wolfe, 24.
The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, reportedly traveled thousands of miles from the U.S. West Coast to carry out the attack. Lakanwal arrived in the United States in 2021 under a program providing special immigration protections for Afghans following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Former President Donald Trump, informed of the incident, stated that the shooter will face the full extent of U.S. law.
The incident raises new concerns about the safety of the capital and the role of the National Guard, which currently has about 2,000 troops stationed in Washington. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and the exact circumstances of the attack.
