Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia: Perugia Plays Key Role in International Study Published in New England Journal of Medicine

The Hematology Section of the Department of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Perugia has participated in one of the most significant international clinical trials on chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), the “CLL17” study, promoted by the German CLL Study Group, with Professor Paolo Sportoletti serving as the scientific coordinator of the collaboration. The initiative is part of the activities of the Hematology Research Center directed by Professor Maria Paola Martelli.

Patients enrolled in the study were treated at the Perugia University Hospital, ensuring continuity between clinical care and scientific research. The trial compared different targeted therapy regimens, assessing their efficacy and safety in previously untreated patients.

The study revealed a crucial finding: fixed-duration targeted treatments can achieve the same outcomes as continuous therapies, allowing patients to stop medication without losing benefits. This represents a concrete step forward, improving the quality of life for those living with the disease and demonstrating that shorter, focused treatment paths can be both effective and sustainable.

The results were presented at the plenary session of the 2025 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Congress and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, one of the world’s most prestigious scientific journals.

“Participating in a study of this level is a great source of pride,” said Professor Sportoletti. “It has been shown that well-designed, short, targeted therapies can deliver the same results as continuous treatment, easing the therapeutic journey for patients. Our clinical research activities also allow patients to access top-quality treatments without having to travel far.”

Perugia’s contribution, particularly in patient recruitment and monitoring, highlights the center’s leading role in shaping future strategies for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
