Last Saturday, the Italian city of Cosenza hosted a memorable cultural and spiritual event as the prestigious international Ecce Homo Award honored Maria Virginia Basile and Vincenzo Varone for their outstanding literary contributions on the life of Servant of God Natuzza Evolo, the mystic from Paravati who passed away in 2009 in odour of sanctity.
The awarded works – Da qualche parte il Cielo ti risponde. Sulla strada di Paravati (Il Filorosso editore) by Basile and Il Disegno celeste (Libritalia) by Varone – have been praised for their spiritual depth, meticulous research, and the ability to bring to life the extraordinary charisma of Natuzza Evolo. Both authors received the “Narratio Mystica/Spiritualis” recognition, a special commendation highlighting works that convey spirituality through compelling narrative.
Maria Virginia Basile, an accomplished writer, poet, playwright, and former high school teacher, also received a special poetry award for her lyrical piece “Ecce Homo”, celebrated for its emotional intensity and stylistic elegance. Basile is also known for translating one of the seminal biographies of Natuzza Evolo by Professor Valerio Marinelli, merging scholarly rigor with narrative sensitivity.
Vincenzo Varone, a veteran journalist, founder and editor of multiple publications, author of several books, and experienced broadcaster on both radio and television, was recognized for his clear, respectful, and engaging storytelling, which brings readers closer to the human and spiritual dimensions of the mystic’s life.
The Ecce Homo Award, organized by Andrea Fabiani and supported by leading cultural institutions in Argentina and Chile, confirms its international standing. The award also highlights the growing interest in Natuzza Evolo beyond Italy. In London and across the English-speaking world, communities of devoted followers engage with her life and legacy, attending gatherings, spiritual events, and reading works dedicated to her, reflecting a vibrant transnational devotion.
The ceremony thus served as a celebration of literature, culture, and spirituality, recognizing not only the talent of the authors but also the enduring influence of Natuzza Evolo, whose life continues to inspire readers and faithful across Europe, the United Kingdom, and the wider Anglophone world.
