Giuseppe Bonifati: “After Brushing the Sky with a Finger, I Now Touch the Ground”

Having just turned 40, Italian artist Giuseppe Bonifati reflects on his international career, spanning theatre, cinema, and private life, while maintaining the curious and lighthearted perspective that has always accompanied him.

An actor and director, Bonifati has worked with some of the biggest names in world cinema, including Ridley Scott on All the Money in the World, Michael Mann on Ferrari, and Martin Scorsese on the docuseries The Saints. “I maintain the freshness of my early days without the pressure of achieving results at all costs. Perhaps this is the age when you learn to breathe instead of run,” he explains.

By his side for years is Linda Sugataghy, his wife and long-time collaborator: “With her, I have found my home: we live a symbiotic love full of friendship, complicity, and mutual support. Through imagination and the creation of new worlds in writing and art, we experience daily an antidote to everyday banalities.”

Theatre Today
With over fifteen years of experience, 35 productions staged in more than 32 countries, Bonifati’s theatre work remains strong. He recently presented the final chapter of his Dante trilogy, Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso, at the Planetarium in Copenhagen to more than 6,000 spectators: “We have shown how classics can be reborn by engaging with the symbolic places of a city.”

Among his most innovative projects, Artbulance turns theatre into a moving, four-wheeled experience traveling across Europe, combining art, care, and citizenship. At the same time, the Flying Theatre at Billund Airport and the direction of the musical An Ideal American confirm his commitment to experimenting with new formats and contexts. “Even in the clouds!”, Bonifati adds with a smile.

Future Projects
The artist is also working on his debut as a screenwriter and director with Linda. His first fiction feature, Revenge Is a Dish Best Served Cold, tells the story of an Italo-Danish man convinced he is Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, who uncovers secrets during a journey to Calabria. Filming is scheduled for 2027.

In parallel, Bonifati is producing an independent documentary in Spain, planned for 2026 in the La Rioja region, exploring the fleeting nature of emotions and breaking news. He will also star in the upcoming series A Taste for Murder, set in Capri and due to premiere on BritBox North America in 2026.

Bonifati still harbors a dream: “A call from Francis Ford Coppola for his new film announced in Calabria would be the perfect end-of-year gift.”
