Perugia on the international stage: Rector Marianelli attends Lateranense academic year inauguration with Pope Leo XIV

The participation of Massimiliano Marianelli, Rector of the University of Perugia, in the inauguration of the academic year at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome has drawn attention far beyond Italy, highlighting the university’s growing national and international profile. Marianelli was personally invited by the Rector of the Lateranense, attending a ceremony presided over by Pope Leo XIV.

Strengthening Perugia’s academic role

Rector Marianelli’s presence at such a high-profile event underscores the recognition of the University of Perugia’s work in peace studies, integral ecology, and social responsibility—areas of growing interest across European universities, including in the UK. These themes closely align with the Pope’s call for education to actively contribute to global challenges.

In his speech, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the need to educate “men and women capable of building peace every day”, highlighting the importance of academic programmes in peace studies, ecology, and environmental sciences:
“Peace is certainly a gift from God, but it requires well-prepared practitioners and sustainable processes at national and international levels. I therefore urge my university to continue developing these paths with an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach,” he said.

A significant presence in a key academic context

Marianelli’s role in the ceremony—alongside other leading academic authorities—signals the University of Perugia’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with Rome’s higher education institutions and contributing to discussions on education, peace, and global responsibility.

For London and the UK academic community, the Rector’s participation represents a clear message: the University of Perugia is an active player in shaping the future of higher education, engaging in themes of peace, sustainability, and social impact that resonate internationally.

Through his attendance at the Lateranense, Marianelli reaffirmed Perugia’s national and international projection, positioning the university as a bridge between Italian and European academic debates, and a reference point for institutions seeking to integrate ethical and social perspectives into higher education.
