The United Nations General Assembly has officially adopted a resolution establishing a day dedicated to the Mediterranean Diet. Starting next year, November 16 will be celebrated worldwide as International Mediterranean Diet Day.
Scientist Domenico Praticò welcomed the milestone, emphasizing its significance. “Following a healthy diet is not just about choosing food, but about embracing a complete lifestyle. The term ‘diet,’ derived from the ancient Greek word ‘diaita,’ refers to a way of living, a balance of nutrition, physical activity, social interaction, and mental care,” Praticò explained.
He extended special thanks to those who made this international recognition possible, including Antonia Trichopoulou, Maurizio Massari, Sara Roversi, and Stefano Pisani.
The Praticò Lab proudly introduced the concept of the “Health Compass,” a guideline for anyone wishing to adopt a lifestyle based on the Mediterranean Diet. “This is not a passing trend,” Praticò stressed, “but a human heritage that has guided generations toward a healthier and longer life for thousands of years, increasingly supported by scientific evidence.”
November 16 will thus become a global celebration of a lifestyle that combines nutrition, physical and mental well-being, and social connection.
